The Arts

​At Robina State High School we have three specialist Arts Programs on offer to students: Drama Extension, Dance Troupe and Instrumental Music.

Why Study the Creative Arts?

The Creative Arts have been argued as crucial to future proofing our students by equipping them with the higher order thinking skills needed to solve complex real-world problems.

The 21st century skills inherent in the Arts:
            •        creativity

            •        critical thinking
            •        communication
These identified skills form the foundation of content and pedagogy within the Robina Arts signature programs.

Drama Extension

Build your child’s confidence, while developing communication, interpersonal and 21st Century skills by enrolling in Drama Extension. The course is open to Year 7 and 8 students who are interested in building their capability in acting and performance. Students will be committed, passionate and wiling to perform in public. Entry into the course is by audition – see “How to Apply”.  

How it works
Students enrolled in Drama Extension will attend 2 x 70 minute timetabled lessons where they will complete the Australian Curriculum requirements for classroom Drama.  In addition to this, students will attend an afternoon class running from 3:00pm – 4:30pm in which students will partake in specialised workshops with both classroom teachers and industry professionals.  Students will hone their acting and performing skills by participation in full-scale productions, competitions and showcase.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

  • Participation in the annual Gold Coast Secondary Schools Drama Festival – Junior Section
  • Drama Showcases – performed to parents and the school community
  • Involvement in other Arts events (street theatre, small scale productions)


Future Pathways
Year 9 and 10:

  • Curriculum Drama
  • Participation in Gold Coast Secondary Schools Drama Festival – Intermediate Section

Year 11 and 12:

  • General Drama (ATAR)
  • Drama in Practice 


Dance Troupe

Dance Troupe is an extra-curricular program that provides students with the opportunity to train with industry professionals and choreographers, within an exciting, vibrant and supportive environment. Students can audition for Junior Dance Troupe (Years 7, 8 & 9) or Senior Dance Troupe (Years 10, 11 & 12), and will be accepted based on their technical ability and performance skills. Dance Troupe students are committed, passionate, enthusiastic, and have experience performing on stage.

How It Works
Dance Troupe students will attend 1 x weekly rehearsal (usually for 1 hour), where students receive specialist training in Contemporary, Lyrical, Jazz and Hip-hop dance styles. They will also choose Dance as their “GC5 - Cluster Sport” preference, to attend workshops with choreographers and polish their Eisteddfod routines. Extra rehearsals may be required in the lead up to Eisteddfod and concert performances. Students can also choose Curriculum Dance in Year 7 & 8 in which they will 2 x 70 minute timetabled lessons during school time.

    -    Dance Night, Showcase and Dance’ed in the Spotlight at HOTA

    -    Certificate IV in Dance – Delivered in conjunction with Global Dance Pro


Instrumental Music

The Instrumental Music department at Robina High is a busy hub of great musicians taking on many performance opportunities. Our bands perform for our school and wider community of the Gold Coast. We also undertake to performing tours to other parts of Australia.

Instrumental Music inherently develops students’ sense of responsibility as well as commitment and teamwork skills through their participation in ensembles. Learning an instrument also boosts resilience by fostering the ability to work towards long-term goals. Learning an instrument has also been proven by numerous studies to enhance brain function and boost academic scores.

Many Instrumental students are amongst the top achievers academically and manage to successfully balance their academic, cultural and sporting interests.

How it works
Instrumental Music is a co-curricular program, where small group instrument lessons work in conjunction with the regular school timetable. Our program includes: 2 Concert Bands, 2 Stage Bands, 2 String Ensembles and a Percussion Ensemble. The ensembles rehearse once a week, either before, or after school.

    -    Band tours within Australia
    -    Participation in school lunch concerts and flash mobs

How To Apply

Dance & Drama Auditions
All applicants must complete the application form and return it to our Reception or email it to our HOD of Art, Liam Mathers.


There are two options for auditioning for our Dance and Drama programs:
Face to Face

  • Each year we will hold 2 x auditions occurring after school hours
  • Join our Facebook page for updates for key dates and times
  • Local primary schools will also be provided with information as it comes to light

Drama Extension

Dance Troupe

  • Film a 1 minute video of choreography in either  Contemporary, Lyrical or Jazz


The video frame should capture the full body (head to toe) of the applicant while dancing/ performing and sound quality should be audible. Submissions can be on a USB taken to Reception (labelled with student name) or a OneDrive, Vimeo or YouTube link supplied by applicant to the above email.

Instrumental Music

Students who have participated in Instrumental Music lessons in Primary School will receive automatic entry into the program. Questions regarding experience in Instrumental Music will form part of the general enrolment interview. Please ensure you inform staff at enrolment interview if you would like your child to continue Instrumental Music in high school.
