Robina State High School provides two guidance and counselling officers for its students, their parents/guardians and staff. Ruby Farley looks after Year 8, 9 & 11 students. Kristel Freeman looks after Year 7, 10 & 12 students.
This service enables students to successfully resolve an increasingly broad and challenging range of educational and developmental issues that may concern them in their progress through High School. The Guidance Officers helps prepare students for fulfilling life experiences in careers including university, TAFE, trades, Defence Force or private enterprise.
1. Career Counselling and Information Service
Assists students to select subjects and courses appropriate to their interests, aspirations and achievement
Helps them develop successful and effective study skills
Provides them with information on Tertiary institutions in Queensland and interstate (courses offered, prerequisite subjects and OP/Rank required)
Helps students and parents to interpret school assessment and understand Student Profile System
Provides information on educational and vocational pathways
Provides students with links to resources
2. Personal Counselling Service (Students and Parents)
Helps students successfully resolve personal concerns which may be impeding their progress at school/home
Enhance students coping skills in worrying or stressful situations that occur during adolescence
Enhance parents' coping skills and provide support
Refer student and family to relevant support agencies in the community
Encourage and reinforce an atmosphere of availability for students to drop-in during lunch-breaks etc. for timely management of their problems before they escalate
3. Learning Difficulties and Disabilities
The Guidance Officer works with teachers and specialists such as paediatricians and speech pathologists to identify problems and recommend support for the class room and personally.
Psycho-educational assessment for verification process that incorporates the support of specialist Visiting Teachers and appropriate support agencies.
Appointments
Students can make appointments to see the Guidance Officers themselves - before school or during breaks. They may also be referred by teachers or administration.
When parents wish to contact the Guidance Officers, they do so by ringing the school office (07) 5562 3444 and making an appointment. Our Guidance Officers are located at our Support House.
