Squash Winners!

Robina won all four rubbers Thursday night to go straight through to the Gold Coast Winter Pennant Squash Grand Final to be held on Friday August 5.

Finishing top of the table last week, Robina entered the Semi this week, minus their number two player Lachlan Lye (year 12), who was away in Melbourne with family. Lachlan was replaced by Calum MacKenzie (Year 10), who fought out a long five set affair in front of an excited loudly cheering crowd. Calum has filled in on a number of occasions and Thursday’s five set victory is surely his proudest effort to date.

After losing the top spot in the individual rankings a week ago, Captain Tony Levings won in three straight “sets” and moved back in to top place in the rankings of the forty-player league. Tony responded with “order has been restored”.

To round out the team result Travis Dunn and Shaymus Gooley (year 12) played up in the team order to compensate for the loss of Lachlan who usually plays number 2. Both enjoyed the challenge of playing higher up in the order, winning 3-0 and 3-1 respectively.

In a night that saw anything associated to Robina High School win, Mitchell Burton in the rarefied air of the Open league won through to finals. Mitchell graduated Robina High School a few years ago now and has been playing Open grade for many seasons. The Open players include ex-world champions such as Brett Martin, and players recently return from the world professional circuit. Also, Gareth Jones in the B-grade won and his team has now struggled through to the Semi-Final next Thursday.
