Huntingdale Primary Taiko Drum Troupe |
The sound of beating drums could be heard right around the school over two days when we welcomed the Huntingdale Primary Taiko Drum troupe to Robina High. They were on tour from their school in Victoria. Huntingdale Primary Bilingual School operates a Japanese Immersion program throughout their whole school - Robina High has two Japanese Immersion classes, one each in Yrs 8 and 9. A range of Japanese and Music classes from Robina High enjoyed watching the Taiko Drum performances. We also welcomed several of our feeder primary schools here to be part of these unique activities. |

Extreme Science Experience |
Six Year 10 Robina High School Physics students enjoyed a day in Brisbane with NASA astronaut, Dr Andy Thomas. The annual Extreme Science Experience for 2008 gave Physics students the opportunity to attend a series of lectures and workshops all related to current science issues. Studies show that by 2010, Australia will have a shortage of 20,000 scientists and engineers. When asked if the RSHS participating students were now considering a profession in science, all agreed that their experience had made a scientific vocation seem much more worthwhile. Physics student, Sylvia Waltenberg said, “Andy Thomas actually made science sound interesting. I think a lot of the kids that went there are now considering a career in science.”

Keen Year 8 sportsman, Riley Treadwell has already made his mark on the Titans team. Riley recently won a Qld-wide competition to design new headgear for Titans player Nathan Friend. Nathan was looking to jazz up his traditionally black headgear and Riley had exactly what he was looking for. Riley submitted 13 designs altogether with several making Nathan’s shortlist. The winning design featured the Titans blue and gold colours and was first worn by Nathan at the Titans/Raiders match at Skilled Park. Apart from winning 4 tickets to see the match Riley also got to meet Nathan after the game and have some photos taken. Riley said, "I was excited to see Nathan wearing the headgear I had designed. It looked pretty good." Friend presented Riley with the hot and sweaty headpiece for him to keep. Riley says he plans to wear it for his own footy games which he plays for both Robina SHS and the Mudgeeraba Redbacks. Riley was one of the recipients of a Sporting Scholarship to Robina High for 2008. |

JAPANESE IMMERSION @ Robina State High School |
We are very proud and excited to announce that the first High School Japanese Immersion Program in Australia was launched at Robina High School this year. 25 Year 8's and 30 Year 9's have begun the exciting journey of Immersion, as they study Maths, Japanese, Science and Computers in Japanese. Head of Languages. Mrs Sellina Mc Cluskey, is very pleased with the student’s progress and sings the praises of the dedicated teachers. Mrs Mayumi Logan is a native Japanese speaker who has qualifications and experience teaching Maths, Computers and Japanese to secondary students. Mr Gareth Jones has qualifications and experience teaching secondary Maths, Science and Japanese – and also happens to be a fluent Japanese speaker having lived and worked in Japan for 20 years. Research shows that students who study immersion language programs achieve better academic outcomes than students who do not. Immersion Programs achieve improved levels of Language proficiency, linguistic skill and multicultural understanding. In addition students of immersion programs achieve improved study skills, thinking skills and problem solving skills. Our Japanese Immersion Program is a program of academic excellence. Our primary goal is mastering the curricular objectives taught, and our secondary goal is for students to become functionally proficient in the language. |

STUDENT SHORT-LISTED AT LITERATURE FESTIVAL |
|
Congratulations to Year 12 student, Aisha Lawton, who was short-listed in the 2008 Somerset National Novella Writing Competition which saw her placed in the top twenty entries. This is a significant achievement considering 109 novellas were submitted from all over Australia this year. The annual Somerset Literature Festival includes four major components: the Queensland Poetry Competition, Librarians’ Conference, the Writers’ Festival and the National Novella Writing Competition. The judges commented that Aisha’s novella, ‘Wünderland, was a ‘bold take’ on Lewis Carroll… Cleverly metafictional, this is ambitious in its reach, complex in expression, and an exceptionally well-conceived and original version of a well-known story.’ |

CELEBRATING MOTHER TONGUE DAY |
2008 is the UN International Year of Languages and Robina SHS launched our celebration of the Year of Languages by joining in the world wide celebration of International Mother Tongue Day – held on 21 February each year. We have a diverse range of non-English speaking people within our school community including approximately 300 students and 1200 parents identified as born in countries other than Australia. Also, we currently have 44 International students studying with us from 16 countries, including Germany, China, Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, Switzerland, England, Thailand, Japan, Cambodia, Hungry, Austria, Iceland, Belgium, Hong Kong and Mexico. As we celebrate our Mother Tongue, we also acknowledge our Indigenous Language speakers as well as those of us who speak Australian English.
To mark Mother Tongue Day many students participated in language quizzes in PROMOTE classes. They also enjoyed listening to their peers speak about their country of birth and in many cases hearing them converse in their native tongue as students shared their experiences of being bi-lingual. We enjoyed reflecting on our indigenous languages as we celebrated linguistic and cultural diversity in our community. |

Our 14 years girls team competed in the QSSF Premier League mid-February and won the event. This is the 3rd year of the competition. The competition has 6 age groups played throughout the year.
The girls won all of their round-robin games having to then back up straight after their last round-robin match at 9pm to compete in the final which they won.
This was our first win of a Premier League tournament and with this victory it means that Robina SHS has won every major competition we have entered at least once over the 10 years the program has been running. |
