New Drama Studio Officially Opened
What has traditionally be known as the PAC foyer has been transformed into a Drama Studio complete with lighting, sound, curtains, ceiling mounted data projector, screen and a new floor. This new facility was officially opened on Thursday, 26 June and has already proved to be a real asset to the Arts department. Funding for the refurbishment was made available through our P&C and also the Queensland Treasury Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

Firebirds Fly In
We had 2 Queensland Netball Firebirds come in recently to run some sessions with two Year 9 HPE classes. Students and staff were excited to have Romelda Aiken (GS) and Tamsin Greenway (GA) join them and to have them share some skill development activities.

Dance Night 2008
An excited crowd gathered at the Robina Community Centre the last Wednesday night of Term 2 for our Annual Dance Night. Congratulations to everyone who performed and also to those who choreographed routines. The evening wasn't just about dance: Senior Art students had set up an exhibition of their work in the Council's Art Gallery, and the String Ensemble provided entertainment in the foyer before the show. We also enjoyed having the dance troupes from Mudgeeraba State School and Clover Hill State School perform in our dance night for the first time.

Queensland Youth Aerospace Forum
Year 11 student, Josh Stephens, has long been fascinated with aviation, planes, jets and the like. He was rapt to be selected to attend the 10th annual Queensland Youth Aerospace Forum (QYAF2008) recently held at the University of Queensland. The forum is the premier aerospace event in Australia for secondary students. This five-day program brought together 50 of the most talented senior high school students across Queensland and interstate who are considering careers within the aerospace industry. The 5 day live-in event included lectures, industry visits and a series of activities at Amberley Airbase. Josh said it was a great experience and has opened his eyes to some exciting career possibilities.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Australia marks the celebrations 6-13 July, which is during our school holidays, so we organised a series of events during our last week of term. We were pleased to welcome members of the Kalwun Development Corporation to our Celebration Assembly to speak to us about Indigenous history on the Gold Coast and also to have two men play the didgeridoo. There has also been a display in library of historical artefacts and books relating to the Indigenous community.

Attorney General pays Robina a visit
Attorney General, Kerry Shine, visited Robina High School as part of his visit to the Gold Coast. Year 12 Legal Studies students had the opportunity to talk with Mr Shine on Law related issues. Several of the students are interested in a career in Law and found the session very interesting and helpful. Di Reilly MP, State Member for Mudgeeraba joined the class and also shared her insights into the State legal processes.

National Teaching Award Recipient
We are proud to announce that senior Mathematics teacher, Graham Herlihy, was amongst the winners at the 2008 Australian Government National Awards for Quality Schooling held in Canberra. The awards recognise the quality of teachers and raise awareness of the important work of teachers and schools. Graham was nominated in the 'Excellence By A Teacher' category. Graham has had great success in re-engaging students in learning through the League For Life initiative of Robina State High School. His innovative approach has been highly successful in improving academic and behavioural outcomes for students. Graham's commitment has greatly assisted students to achieve results beyond their expectations and experience success in the classroom and on the sporting field.

In 2007, Graham was named Gold Coast Teacher of the Year. This recent award is further testimony to Graham's significant contribution to education.

We are pleased to officially welcome Erin Simpson as our School Chaplain. Erin was introduced to the student body at a recent Celebration Assembly and met some of our student leaders at the morning tea which followed. The school chaplaincy program is an initiative funded by the Federal Government providing pastoral care to students, staff and parents. In the short time Erin has been at Robina High School she has been providing positive support and guidance not only to students but also to some of our families. Erin is located in the Parent Centre and appointments to see her can be made through reception.
