Congratulations Aaron Thompson |
Former Robina High School student Aaron Thompson achieved a life long dream during the holidays when he signed a Major League Baseball contract with the Texas Rangers. Aaron will be living there from March to October this year to train and play in minor leagues. In 2010 he will be playing over there on a full-time basis.
For any baseball player anywhere in the world, to sign a major league contract straight out of high school is nearly unheard of. Most people try to gain a position in a college in America and then it is up to them to stand out amongst thousands of elite players before the Major League clubs start looking to sign them up. So for Aaron to achieve this coming from Robina High Australia is exceptional.
Robina High School’s Baseball Excellence Coach Wayne Ough says Aaron’s signing is great reward for someone who has worked hard to achieve his goals. A great athlete, Aaron has represented South Coast Region in School Baseball, Gold Coast Region in club ball and the Queensland State Team. He has also previously been nominated as a Sportsperson of the Year at Robina’s Sports Awards.

Congratulations Courtney Massey |
Former Golf Excellence student Courtney Massey has secured a ‘dream’ scholarship to the University of Minnesota with a position in their Ladies Golf Team.
Courtney was the inaugural Chris Hammett Memorial Award winner and a member of the 2006 Qld All-Intercollegiate Golf Team. She was captain of the Qld Junior Team and as a junior, was a member of the Qld Women’s Team that won the Australian Interstate Team Series. In 2007 Courtney was a scholarship holder with the Australian Institute of Sport and played in the Australian Ladies Open and ANZ Ladies Masters.
Having commenced 2009 at the university, Courtney will play in a vast number of the 52 American states in most weeks of the year gaining invaluable experience and exposure in the best ‘student tour’ in the world. Many Australians have chosen this path for their golf development before using it as a launching pad to a very successful professional golf career.
Courtney is a fantastic ambassador for both our Golf Program and Robina State High School and she has deserved every achievement through her diligent work ethic.

The bush certainly hides some stunning secrets! But sometimes you're lucky to be in the right spot at the right time which was the case for one of our international students. The Year 12 Recreational students were hiking on South Stradbroke Island recently. On Friday the students hiked into Couran Cove where the staff there run the students through a bike treasure hunt. It was whilst riding her bike that the student heard a sound in the bush near her and turned to see a python crushing a wallaby that was still alive and kicking at this stage. The student quickly got her camera out and photographed what transpired right through until the phython finished consuming the wallaby. Everyone present admits it was certainly one of the most amazing experiences ever had. |

We Are Proud of Our Yr 9 National Assessment Data |
Robina SHS Year 9 students have performed commendably on the National Assessment exams conducted earlier this year. The data shows the percentage of Robina SHS students meeting or exceeding the National Standard in Literacy and Numeracy was very favourable. We are proud of our staff and students who worked hard to achieve such outstanding results. |

2008 Sports Awards Dinner |
300 students, staff and parents assembled at Robina Community Centre for our gala Sports Awards Dinner. What a great night! Blair Tonkin and Paul Bullpitt were once again our very entertaining hosts. Mr Tonkin took the opportunity to teach a few brave souls some of his silver medal winning linedancing moves. Mr Bullpitt was disappointed that no one from the Firebirds turned up (because he was all decked out in his netball skirt and ready to go!). Beck McDonnell and Gene Hei Hei provided the audience with some great music. Our canteen ladies did an awesome job with the catering (and thanks to the students who waited on tables). The two special guests shared an insight into their sporting lives: Shane Harris, World Beach Flags Champion; and Bryce Lindores, Beijing Paralympian (blind) and bronze medalist in cycling. Congratulations to Junior All Rounders, Maya Sidhu and Jesse Kerrison; Senior All Rounders, Jaiden Macknamara and Matt Harris. Our 2008 Sportswoman of the Year is Skye Sowden, and Sportsman of the Year is Jesse Kerrison. Congratulations to everyone who has been part of our sporting program at Robina SHS this year. |

Robina SHS Supports Blood Bank |
Many thanks to the students and staff who visited the Blood Bank. Nurse Helen Dredge, who organised for the van to be placed in our school grounds for the day, said she, along with the Blood Bank staff, were amazed by the response of our school community. By the end of the day over 40 bags of blood had been collected. Many of the donors were there for the first time. One of our Year 11 students said, "I was feeling nervous seeing it was my first time, but now I have a really rewarding feeling". Knowing that their blood donation can be used to save up to 3 lives is enough encouragement to keep donating in the future. |

In October 2009 Robina High welcomed 148 guests from Kumon Kokusai High School, Japan. Kumon Kokusai has had 15 visits to the Gold Coast but never enjoyed an integrated homestay - school program. This is the largest homestay study tour that has ever been hosted in Queensland and represents the wonderful value our school community places on building international understandings for our students.
The 138 students and 10 teachers enjoyed six days with our host families and an interesting school program which included making anzac biscuits with Hospitality Students, learning about Forensic Science with Mr Wood, playing sports with PE classes and teaching Robina High Students about Japanese culture and language. |
