President of the Rotary Club of Mudgeeraba, Eliz Garland presents Robina High School Captain Cameron King and Surfers Paradise State School Prep student, Cody Dumka with a $783.40 cheque.
For the past 3 years, Robina High School has supported Tore Village with an annual Christmas shipment of clothing, footwear, toys and much needed households items. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Mudgeeraba, we were able to send an additional shipment of text books no longer needed at Robina High school to Nadronga High School in Fiji where they are desperately in need of school resources. This shipment also contained coloured pencils, paper and stationery collected and donated by Surfers Paradise State School children for the students of Cuvu District Primary School in Fiji. Tore village elder, Mr Josua Turagakece, passes along his heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in this collaborative effort.
Our annual shipment is sent in November. Donations of footwear, particularly larger sizes of footy boots, joggers and thongs are most gratefully received. The village also appreciates donations of used clothing, toys and other household items. If you are travelling to Fiji and visiting the Coral coast, you are invited to visit Tore village (near Sigatoka) to meet our Fijian friends. Just mention you are from Robina High School. Donations can be dropped in to the school administration office anytime throughout the year. Please include your name so that we can thank you personally. |

Juggling is something Michael Hughes not only does well on stage, he's also cultivating this as a very useful life skill. He is a very dedicated and talented young man who, in addition to his exceptional dance and drama skills, has demonstrated he is also an excellent Japanese language student.
This year, as a Year 12 student, Michael was determined to study Japanese in the GUESTS program (Griffith University Early Start to Tertiary Study). Numerous people advised him it probably couldn't be done because of the heavy workload associated with completing Year 12 and doing a very difficult university subject concurrently. Not only that, but it was a second year course requiring three days a week at uni and an expectation of twenty hours work at home.
Despite the odds Michael was keen to proceed. He says, "Studying Japanese since Year 5 and visiting Japan in 2007 on a school trip has made the language come alive". Michael proved the sceptics wrong and achieved a Distinction for his excellent grades at Griffith University in Semester 1. In fact, Michael received 100% for numerous tests.
At the same time, Michael also played the lead role in Robina High's school musical, 'Circa Mistique', danced in eisteddfods and the school's annual Dance Night, continued his vocal training and maintained a part-time job teaching acrobatics.
Michael claims, "Juggling your passions is never hard work. GUESTS is a must if you are planning on going to uni. It gives you an insight into what to expect later on." |

Certificate 3 in Food Processing Winner |
Congratulations to Year 12 student, Lani Hearfield who was awarded a silver medal in a competition held at Ashmore TAFE at the end of June. All of the decorations on the cake are edible and Lani also made the poppy seed and orange cake used as the base. All of this was achieved in the middle of Year 12 exams and assignments.
Lani commenced work at the end of Year 10 on the Certificate 3 in Food Processing as a School Based Apprenticeship. Once she finishes Year 12 Lani still has two years remaining on the apprenticeship. She spends two days a week working at Yenmart Pastry Art in Burleigh Heads and currently makes all the flowers sold in the business. Lani dreams of travelling to Europe to work alongside German and French pastry chefs after she finishes her apprenticeship. |

Evergrowing Baseball Excellence |
The Robina High School's Baseball Excellence program continues to go from strength to strength. Year 10 student and team pitcher, Beau Rohweder was selected to play in the Australian Academy's Under 17s team travelling to Taiwan to play in the World Championships in August this year.
This championship team consists of players from all over Australia. Beau is the only team member from the Gold Coast. He has been playing with the Surfers Paradise team for 10 years as a left handed pitcher.
Prior to flying out to Taiwan the team spent three weeks training at their Palm Meadows academy. The international championship competition hosts a strong contingent of teams including Cuba, Japan, Vietnam, China, Russia, USA, Australia and Mexico.
Beau says, "I was surprised and excited to be selected for the team. There are a lot of top players and the competition will be great to be a part of as well as watch". |

2010 Japanese Immersion Program Applications |

Robina State High School Dance Night was initiated in 2002 and since this time has clearly established itself as a highlight of the school calendar.
The night consisted of an entertaining blend of musical, contemporary, tap and hip-hop dance sequences that were expertly performed by students from all year levels. It also provided an opportunity to showcase dance sequences developed specifically for the Gold Coast Dance Eisteddfod. This year we closed the show with the senior musical performance 'Smooth Criminal', an entry in the upcoming eisteddfod. We were also entertained by the League for Life boys 'street hip hop' as well as some very clever student choreography.
Congratulations to the team of students and staff who volunteered their time and of course the very dedicated dance teachers; Christine Storey and Cathy Harwood who made the night possible. |

CIRCA MYSTIQUE – HIT SCHOOL MUSICAL |
At the end of June, Robina High's most talented actors, singers and musicians took to the stage at Robina Community Centre to premiere our own original musical, 'Circa Mystique'. Miss O’Dwyer, Miss Jones and students had spent four months writing the script and composing music. The finished product captivated audiences over several performances.
'Circa Mystique' is the story of three sisters whose father owns and runs a circus. One of the sisters falls in love, against her father’s wishes, and soon a series of events unfold that affect all of their lives in years to come.
We are very proud of the talented artists within our student community. |
